Thinking About Progress

1. I would define progress as a growth or development in a certain skill, that you obtain by practicing.

2. The Progressive Era is during the 1890s and 1920s in the United States. Progressivism is a word that shows the influences of the economic and social dilemmas that industrialization had shown to America. Progressivism was a social movement that then became into a political movement.

3. The Progressive Era is associated with social reform issues like women rights, learning, unionization, troubles with urbanization, labor conditions, working children, and industrialization. The Progressive Movement had political reforms that helped these issues. The Progressives thought the government should help the problems with the society, with helping restore welfare of Americans back to what it used to be.

4. The progressive reforms all talk about the rights people should have, and a big theme of labor and who the laborers should be. The progressive reforms are all economic reforms for laborers and allowing children to work.

5. The 4 goals of progressives was based on improving the reforms and the society from the way th society was before the Progressive Era.
       1. Making a "Economic Reform"
       2. Guarding the "Social Welfare"
       3. Showing "Efficiency"
       4. Advancing "Moral Improvement"

The Future

1. One of the people making predictions about the future 100 years ago was John Elfreth Watkins. His successful predictions from 100 years were digital color photography, pre-prepared meals, mobile phones, the rising heights of americans, slowing population growth, hothouse vegetables, television, tanks, bigger fruit, and the Acela Express. His unsuccessful predictions were no more C, X, or Q in the alphabet, everyone will walk 10 miles a day, no more cars in large cities, no more mosquitos or flies. Other predictions from a 19th-century German Chocolate Company 100 years ago was that the police would have x-rays, flying machines, movable houses, airships, undersea ships, North Pole trip, a water walk, a ship railway, a roofed city, theater, moving sidewalks, and good weather machine. Predictions from 50 years ago from Robert Heinlein was that there would be interplanetary travel, contraception and control of disease, the U.S. will start a "preventive war", intelligent life will be found on Mars, mankind will not destroy itself nor will civilization be destroyed. Predictions by Isaac Asimov about 50 years ago is that robots will neither be common or good, appliances will have no electrical cords, vehicles will have robot brains, wall screens will replace the ordinary sets.

2. The 19th-century German Chocolate Company predictions seem to be a wish-list of what they hoped to have for the future because they were extravagant dreams, but the predictions from 50 years ago are more accurate to what our generation is trying to produce. An example of a car with a robot brain is the Autonomous Car that drives itself.

3. The predictions that have come true are mobile phones, television, digital color photos, bigger fruit, tanks, appliances without electrical cords, and vehicles with robot brains. Some of the bizarre predictions were the good weather machine, and the U.S. starting a "preventive war".

4. There is a trend of us being able to fly, and devices helping us to communicate with each other. They seem to be focused on innovated transportation. Yes, people seem to be anticipating a better world because they are planning to travel all over the world in different ways and even to different planets.

5. Our future world will be shaped around our ideas and goals of the changing what we have now. I predict that we will have holographic devices, flying cars, no need to drive or walk anywhere because of actual hovering boards and cars. Almost like something indoor brain that will just pop up, not needing any devices or anything just thinking about it and it will be searched or defined for you. i see a whole different world with people not depending on things they normally depend on like cars, TV’s, phones, and other devices people can’t stop using today.

6. The future is in our hands because we will be the ones having the ideas to change the world. The future would not c
hange if we did not continue to come up with ideas and put them into action. The government and the people decide what the future of our country is. The future is completely up to us and how we want to make it.

How do you analyze a political cartoon

My knowledge for analyzing a political cartoons is to understand what the picture is trying to show and major political characters that it is representing, and if they are being shown in a good or a bad way. I learned from the political cartoon guide to notice and look at the symbolism and exaggeration that the cartoon shows. Because both of these things can show the larger picture of the cartoon and the point they are trying to get across. Also the irony is an important thing to look at, which shows the techniques the influence people's take on the cartoon. I will use all of the devices to interpret a political cartoon by 3 main things that popped out to me: symbolism, exaggeration, and irony, being more systematic than before.

Philippine War with America
This cartoon reflects the annexation of the Philippines after the war and people entering into the now American territory through the gates. Allowing people to enter freely but the people entering looking troubled and angry about what is going on, and showing a important mark of American imperialism. Letting your eyes float onto a man resembling to Uncle Sam welcoming people into the Philippines.

Foothold on Philippines
This cartoon shows a foothold upon Philippines that Americans have, using your eyes you can see Emilio Aguinaldo in corner, trying to get underneath the foot and get his country back. Showing that America has its marks on Philippines in a bold way of putting their foot down, proclaiming this country theirs. And a sign saying "Notice The Us is Requested to Withdraw P.D.Q. (signed) Aguinaldo. The writing saying that the Philippines has given up against the Americans and lost control of their own country. Observing the new boot of the Americans over the Philippines when it is annexed.

Cuba Relationship with US
This cartoon shows the relationship between US and Cuba and how it is kind of rocky. You can see that there are problems with some of the Central American countries and Caribbean ones like Cuba, known by the hat with Cuba's name on it. Uncle Sam surrounded by "the countries" saying on the cartoon "Don't step on my feet, boys" showing America's pride.

The Legend of Eddie Aikau

1. Eddie Aikau saved the Hawaiian culture from getting overrun by the Americans and Australians, and he risked his own life to save others making him in my mind the hero of Hawaii and the Hawaiian identity.

2. Document Elements
 a) Topic: Eddie Aikau
 b) Focus: The Hawaiian identity and surfing career of Eddie Aikau
 c) Angle: Eddie Aikau was the embodiment of the Hawaiian identity because of his dedication to the Hawaiian culture and compassion for others.

3. The documentary was made as part of ESPN's programming because it shared the film's content around surfing and sports itself, and the history and story of Eddie Aikau. The filmmakers audience's expectations were that the documentary was more action of the film then historical acts because of the documentary being played by ESPN. Also the expectations of it being more of a sports based film brings in viewers of the sports based fans.

4. The film would have been made differently by PBS or the History channel because these programmers would have focused on more of the historical evidence. Focused more upon the Hawaiian culture and identity of Eddie and his historical influence on Hawaii.

6. The annexation of Puerto Rico was between the United States and Puerto Rico. It had affected the Puerto Rican economy and people, which reduced the cost of cash crops and led to less wages for laborers of the territory. Puerto Ricans had thought after the Jones Act of 1917 they would behaving the same rights as the Americans, but really the Americans had taken advantage of the territory's resources leaving them with a different economy.
Topic: Annexation of Puerto Rico by the United States
Focus: Impact of Annexation of Puerto Rico on the Puerto Rican economy and people
Angle: Americans had a hungry appetite for cheap cash crops of other countries and laborers. Americans had taken advantage of the Puerto Rican laborers, which led to a growing reduction of food on the island.

Phrenology

My job was to describe in detail what the group members did and how they described and looked up the description of the bust. My group looked up information and definitions of the artifact and the purpose of the item. Understanding the importance of phrenology and connection of it to the artifact and Franz the German Scientist who helped to mention the brain and started the conversation about brains in general. Lorenzo Fowler who created the artifact of the bust which included ideas of the brain and maps. Provenance is the place of origin or the earliest known history of something, and the record of ownership of a work of art or antique used as a guide to authenticity or quality. I learned from the group members about when researching put the whole description or title of the artifact to find out the real information on the bust. To say the words said on the bust itself and descriptions of color and size and any details to help narrow the focus down. This bust could be used as a primary source if you are changing it to ask a question about the company and how the artifact was being produced by it and the time period of it being used makes it a proper primary source.
